Welcome to my Madagascar craft website and travel blog where you can find travel tips and advice on places to visit as well as handmade Madagascan crafts, paintings and photography. A vast island almost 7 times the size of Ireland, Madagascar remains one of the few places where bikes and pedalled rickshaws outnumber cars in the regional cities and where travelling feels like a throwback to a different time. A country where roads are often no more than rutted tracks and passengers are sometimes recruited to push stricken vehicles out of whatever hole they are in. Travel in Madagascar is not always easy but those who do are rewarded with adventures few places on earth can provide.
Activities in Madagascar range from visiting vast breathtaking national parks to witnessing enormous biodiversity and coming into contact with animals unseen anywhere such as the wailing Indri, which make this a country like nowhere else I have been. Travelling around Madagascar is not always easy, especially if doing so independently so I have posted some logistical information from the six months I have spent travelling there. As well as that people who are planning a budget trip or adventure tour in Madagascar may also find some useful pointers in the travel advice section. There are so many amazing things to see and do in Madagascar and I will post information on any places I visit to provide some ideas.
Travelling in Madagascar has brought me into contact with all kinds of interesting and creative people. The country has proved such an inspiration that I have even gotten a book out of it which details travel through this amazing land and a cast of characters it would be difficult to make up.
I am now working directly with a number of local families to export crafts from Madagascar including vintage model cars from recycled metal, handwoven scarves and soaps.
Some of the photos I have taken have been painted onto canvas by street artists in the capital Antananarivo and these will soon be available for sale either as prints or as the original. I will also be making prints of some of the more interesting photos which will also be available for purchase.
